mikefl
Hi,I have some recent medical bills that I incurred due to a surgery and a visit to the Hospital. I have been making payments to the various places. However they went ahead anyway and sent me to collections. Are they violating any laws since I am making payments? Also some of these places stopped sending me statements although I am making payments directly to them and they are cashing my checks. Don't I have the right to receive monthly statements so that I know what I owe and can ensure that they are doing proper accounting on their end? I have been unemployed for almost 1 year and my income is fixed and very limited. I would like some suggestions on what I should/can do. Unfortunately I could not qualify for charity care because now if you have some sort of 401K that pretty much disqualifies you (go figure). I do not want these collection agencies to add any entries to my credit report which I am already working on very hard to fix. Thanks.-Mike
Guest usctrojanalum
Are they violating any laws since I am making payments? No, medical bills are to be paid in full when billed. I've been sued by a few hospitals and in my experience they are tough to deal with. They really do not like accepting payments because, as I was told, that it is a bookkeeping nightmare for them. Also some of these places stopped sending me statements although I am making payments directly to them and they are cashing my checks. Medical providers do not have to follow the same guidelines that credit card companies do.
