workingpoor
Anybody else experience this? Seems false and misleading to me. That's really the only reason I answered the phone. I was ALMOST caught off guard.
willingtocope
Just goes to show that CAs can pretty much call themselves whatever they like. The only FTC ruling I'm aware of says the CA shouldn't use anything like "credit bureau" in their name.It also illustrates something I've been preaching for a long time..."debt settlement" companies are in reality CAs who use the "more files with honey" approach. antiquedave
did you take a picture of the phone screen and record the call?

I was ALMOST caught off guard. It probably is misleading, but I think it might be difficult to argue the point in court. The CA could point out that their job is to collect on debts, therefore they help to settle the debts.

But I think the difference between a CA and a debt settlement service would have to come into play, and the fact that someone is more likely to answer the phone and give info to a settlement service because they are more likely to have your best interest at heart than a CA.
