Do I have to Order Reports to Dispute?

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Its been so long since I've been here I had to create a new account! I need to dispute and clean up a few TL's I see on the big 3 via Truecredit subscription.

I tried to order all 3 via freecreditreport.com a few months ago and only one was served up. The others said they cannot be provided via internet for some reason. So I never began disputing. But I really need to get started so my question is:

Can I begin writing the bureaus via certified letter disputing them based upon what I see in Truecredit? If so, how do I identify myself in the letter? Do I list my social etc.

I know if I wanted to dispute online I would need a report number so I would need to have obtained a copy either free annual or purchased - but I'm hoping I can begin disputing without this...

I suppose if I must order copies I will. Even though I keep paying Truecredit - and yes I know the scores are fakos but the deltas and overall reporting are ultimately true and can be a good basis to start from no?

Don't use the report you obtained from that site - it is not accurate. Freecreditreport.com is an experian site that actually charges you something like $14.95/mth after a limited trial period.

You can get your credit reports from www.AnnualCreditReport.com which is the ONLY official site for your free reports. You can get all three reports there one time per year. To dispute any entries on your report, you will need at least one report to see what is inaccurate. Remember each CRA reports differently - you may have 24 TL's on one report and 11 on another! IMO it is best to start with the actual report so you know what to dispute. After all, the first report on each CRA is free each year.

As to the TrueCredit score - it is not mathmatically related to the FICO score. It is another formula altogether. If you are looking to see your FICO scores, go to myFICO.com

Thanks. By the way it was annualcreditreport.com that I used not freecreditreport.com. I guess the stupid commercials got in my head.

Anyhow, I requested reports from annualcreditreport.com and it only gave me one of them. The other two said I cannot get them online at that time for some reason.

My question is if I can send certified letters to the CRA's without having bought a current credit report? And if so, how do I identify myself in the letter so they know who I am. Do I just provide name and TL account info? Or do I include Social as well?

Well, they use the account number that's on your report to reference the item you are requesting be removed. But the account numer should be the same for all of them so I guess in theory it should work.

There's really only one way to find out. Try it and see.

But I would keep in mind that not all negative items will appear on one credit report. Many times companies or collections only report to one CRA. That's why you see some people here say 11 neg with experian, 15 neg with equafax, 9 neg with Trans.

I guess what I'm saying ultimately is while you might be able to use one to clean up some of the reports. There may be some really nasty stuff on some of the other reports that you won't even know about.

Best of luck.

I was thinking about your situation a little bit. When it says they can't access your report it is usually one of a couple of reasons: 1) you already accessed your free report for the year or 2) the address you have entered on your request does not match the address on the credit report.

Sometimes the address on the credit report is either an old address (previous address) or a wrong address. If you think that might be the reason you were not able to get your report, you would need to straighten that out with the individual CRA that did not supply the report. If that info is wrong, there is no telling what else may or may not be on the report.

my daughter ran into that when she requested her free credit reports (not being able to get them online). the site does tell you how to get them via mail, which is what she did. (iirc, she had to print and fill out a form, that was available onthe website, and then mail her request.) she received the reports via mail in about 10 days.
