So I get a letter saying I owe 10k...from a credit card I dont remember having. NCC said this is a valid debt..i called the credit card company...this is from 1993...Is there a limit?? I cant remember 18 days ago,let alone 18 years. I dont remember running out on a credit card...granted I was young, but lived at home, all mail would have been forwarded from my parents...what do I do??

If I am correct, SOL on CC debt in the State of RI is 10 years. If you have not paid on this account or admitted that it was your debt you have nothing to be concerned about. Write a brief note to whoever sent you this letter and say " Dear Sir, The alledged debt is time-barred. Sincerely yours,"

If you make even the smallest of payments on this account it will restart the SOL and then you will be at battle with numerous debt collectors for the next 10 years from the day you made the payment..

so 18 years ago, I lived in CA...would that make a difference?

the credit card company said it was sold to NCC in 1999, so I should be ok then right? I have never acknowledged this debt as I have no idea about it.

Thanks for the response, you have set my mind at ease a bit..much appreciated.

THIS. Do not make the mistake of making a payment and restarting the SOL.

It doesn't matter if you lived in CA 18 years ago. The debt appears to be outside the SOL. Send the C&D letter. Tell them you don't recognize the debt, don't owe it, and dispute it. Then tell them never to contact you again unless it's in writing to inform you that they are closing their files or taking legal action.
