SWAT Team Sent to Collect Student Loans

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

"No, I’m not exaggerating.

Kenneth Wright does not have a criminal record and he had no reason to believe a S.W.A.T team would be breaking down his door at 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

“I look out of my window and I see 15 police officers,” Wright said.

Wright came downstairs in his boxer shorts as a S.W.A.T team barged through his front door. Wright said an officer grabbed him by the neck and led him outside on his front lawn.

“He had his knee on my back and I had no idea why they were there,” Wright said.

According to Wright, officers also woke his three young children ages 3, 7, and 11 and put them in a Stockton police patrol car with him. Officers then searched his house.

As it turned out, the person law enforcement was looking for was not there – Wright’s estranged wife.

“They put me in handcuffs in that hot patrol car for six hours, traumatizing my kids,” Wright said.

Wright said he later went to the mayor and Stockton Police Department, but the City of Stockton had nothing to do with Wright’s search warrant.

The U.S. Department of Education issued the search and called in the S.W.A.T for his wife’s defaulted student loans.

UPDATE: The Dept. of Education says the raid was not for loan collection but part of a criminal investigation into some sort of white collar crime (they didn’t offer much detail beyond that). As Matt Welch points out at the link, that still isn’t an appropriate use for a SWAT team, and still leaves a hell of a lot of unanswered questions.

hey... at least I'm not paying his mortgage too, oh wait...

So a young college aged kid gets thrown in jail, but white collar crime that robs the entire nation.... turns on the printing press?!

Hmmm. There's more to this story. OP has most correct. A Federal SWAT team (apparently associated with the Dept of Education) breaks down a door to search a house for a woman who wasn't there. Apparently they wanted his estranged wife on some manner of fraud relating to education. The search warrant shows it was to be executed by the Dept of Education's Office of Inspector General, and from the list of matters to be seized it sounds as if they suspected her of getting student loans without being enrolled at a college.

Guess the Fed's don't have enough to do except watch reality TV. IMO it's sorta the long way around the barn.

From what I've been reading the last couple of days the suspicion is that she was involved in an organized fraud scheme, most likely one that invented nonexistent students for purposes of bilking the lenders.
