Notified of lawsuit, not through service

Recommended Posts

I received a letter from a mediator the other day stating that a collection lawsuit has been filed against me. The letter states that I may or may not have been served yet. I have in fact not yet been served.

Few questions:

1) Does this mean there is an actual lawsuit against me?

2) How much time do I have to respond (considering the fact that I have not knowledge of this lawsuit beyond that of the letter from the mediator)?

3) There is a case number in the letter, can I just go down to the court to retrieve the information on this?

I want to vigorously defend this because I have no knowledge of this debt, it is not even on my credit report. I do not want a default judgement against me.

Any help would be appreciated.
