Jury Duty Summons

Recommended Posts

I've only done jury duty once in LA...I wasn't picked - maybe cause I wanted to give the death penalty out back after trial....

Really, you'll end up sitting and reading in a lounge - if they even tell you to come in. In CA, you call in the night before and they tell you if you are needed to come down to the courthouse.

I got 2-3 but never got selected. You normally got to call a number the day before and they will tell you if you even got to go, in my case the 2-3 times I called the computer told me that my number was not in the list and didn't have to go. A few of my coworkers went to the preselection, other than drinking coffe and having donuts they didn't do much. They were told they got a jury selected before beeing call. So basically for most of us is just a waste of time, but you might be "lucky" and get call. Just remember to answer bad on each question they do so you make sure you won't spend more time there :)

My 2 cents is that you fall in love with one of those 400 a day affidavits girl and by doing so got banned from any courtroom; another theory would be that your coffee is really bad and the attorneys weren’t impress and so dismissed you. Maybe if you buy better coffee and get a new girl you might get selected. :D

I received the notice only once, and it was for finals week of my last semester. Yeah, I got out of that one really easily. I wouldn't try to sherk it if I were selected now, but I did have a very legitimate reason to not go that time. I seriously doubt I'd get selected now, especially on a consumer case.

It's been well over 20 years since I've been summoned. That time I went, sat around for most of the day, and then we were all dismissed. All the cases that day chose bench trials. My husband has been chosen twice, once for a federal drug case and once for a coroner's jury. He said they didn't really ask him much.

I got called twice. That was when I was working for an insurance company. It was a personal injury case, so of course the Plaintiff attorney used a peremptory on me.

Then I figured out the call in system to check and see if you needed to show. The message would just say show up or don't show and then at the tone you left your name.

When there was enough jurors that called in and told to show up, they changed the message to they had enough jurors. I just keep calling until the message said they had enough jurors. Then I left my name.

I have done it twice and it was a great experience.

One was a drunk driving case and it was her 7th time being charged.

The other was a guy running from the police and went in a strangers house to hide. They told him to leave and he took a butter knife off the counter and held it to his throat and threatened to kill himself if they didn't hide him. He was charged with theft for depriving the owners of the knife the use of the knife.

Got to see a really good defense lawyer in action in the second case.

Thought I would give you all an update to my day of Jury Selection. It's a good thing I got there early. I was the first one in the Jury Room so got a great seat. One observation I noticed right off the bat was County Court houses don't seem to grow as the population grows. The Jury Room they had all 40+ of us in was probably built to hold maybe 20 individuals at most. It was so packed I could have possibly gotten a girl pregnant and not even know it. I really felt sorry for the majority of the people that had to literally stand most of the day. I will admit it was rather uncomfortable sitting in a room with so many people. You really couldn't even look up or you would be looking right at someone. It's a good thing I brought reading material!! Oh, I forgot to mention that the bathrooms were in the same room we were in. So if you went in and had a blow out everyone in the room could hear it.

After about two hours of just sitting there the Baliff started calling people into the court room one at a time to be questioned. I guess seeing as this was taking too long for the Judge, he decided to have everyone come into the court room and the parties could question us in front of everyone. They questioned a total of maybe 25 people and then it was over. I wasn't even questioned. This whole process took a whole business day without a break for lunch. I wish they had the call-in system here!!

I guess I can just chalk this up to a life experience and hope I don't have another one like this anytime soon!! 88-)

That is my biggest complaint about the jury system. We state how important it is but yet do not treat those who take their responsibility with any respect. I have actually heard that the jury room your describe is even worse in the NE where some of the town courthouses were build in the 1700s and early 1800s and have not been modified since.

If you do not start to respect the jurors that are willing to serve more, I think the system is going to collapse on itself.

Jury duty out by me is amazing. Yes, my county is pretty urban and 1.5 million people but we have telephone call in system. When I get called, I go in and say that I support the death penalty 100% and they never pick me.

LOL. I'm actually pretty wishy-washy about the death penalty. I'd just tell them that I could only vote for that punishment if I was so certain about the guilt and heinousness of the crime that I would be willing to execute the person myself. Try applying that viewpoint to how the law would need read to be consistent with it and you'll start to understand why I'm wishy-washy about it.

But as I said, I won't try to get out of jury duty unless I have a legitimate reason.

I am also divided as to the death penalty. On the one hand, I believe that it is a justified punishment in certain cases. On the other hand, my state is run by liberal idiots who can't even balance a budget supported by voters who are largely welfare recipients, when it is a constitutional requirement. Guess who votes all these pus sucking rats back into office? The human filth that manages to crawl out of bed at noon and attach itself to the productive people like some sort of economic fungus. These people are idiots. I simply don't trust them with the authority to have people killed. You have to have a really solid case to take somebody's life. There are too many cases where people have been wrongly convicted to roll the dice with a bunch of wind chime Cumbaya singing airheads who still think you're a racist if you disagree with Jesse Jackson.
