Credit mix up with my father.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I tried applying for a small personal loan on thursday.  To my suprise the banker said she couldn't aprove it because I owed child support money.  Needles to say I was a little confused why my report would show that.  I pulled up my report right away and I noticed Transunion had all of my dad's information instead of mine (we share the same name).  His birt date was on the file as well as his work places and living addresses, not to mention some of his past accounts most of them closed and fully paid except for the child support case.  My old man still owes my mother about 30k for a younger sibling.

I contacted the dispute number on my "creditkeeper" account and they told me i needed to speak with Transunion agents to get this fixed.  The Transunion agent verified the information *my dads* and then asked me what needed changes.  He added a "Jr" to the end of the name and removed his birthday and added mine.  The agent also removed any home addresses that belonged to him.  We went through the report and filed a disputes for any accounts that were his.

Is there anything else I need to do?  I really need to get this fixed asap.  I was trying to explain the situation to the agent, but it seemed he didn't really understand what I was trying to say.  It looked there was some sort of mix up instead of merged info, but i don't know much about the subject.  Maybe you guys can clear this up for me?

Thanks!

You need to get a printed copy of your Transunion credit report and make sure all the required corrections have been made.  Since you're already using CredtKeeper (a useless scam, btw), you may not be able to use www.annualcreditreport.com to get your government mandated yearly free copy, but its worth a try.  You may have to submit a written request for a complete copy and pay a small fee.

Once you have a complete, up to date copy of you TU report, you can check its accuracy.  If you still find inaccurate references, you can try calling again...but you may have to send the written disputes.

They don't make it easy and you may have to sue under the FCRA (see the link at the top of the page) to get it corrected.

Thanks for your time and the information willingtocope.

Man, what a freaking mess.  I can't believe I'm having to pay for my dads stupidity.

In any case, they told me I had to wait 30 days for the account disputes.  I'll try and get that printed copy like you said to make sure everything else was changed.

Thanks again for the advice.

You've bumped your head on one of the problems with the CRAs.  They don't just base their reports on social security number, but they'll also use name, address, even phone number to identify people...and they don't bother to verify they match before they report it.  They basically accept whatever their clients ("the creditors') report and guess about who the data refers to.
