I’m in Florida and being harassed on old debt

It’s a scam.  First, you would not be alerted to the service of legal papers. Second, even if this were legitimate and they sued, you’d have a counterclaim for violation of the FDCPA due to the fact that the debt is time-barred.

You won’t be getting any “legal papers” on Monday.

No papers today, however they are calling harassing me... same number now Saying they are  Cornerstone mauls claims and litigation dept. not sure if this is all in same building however same number. Say if I do not call by end of the day with honest intentions  they will remove hold on my case for non compliance and reinstate file and service will commence tomorrow morning. Also left a docket number. (This was left in a intimidating voice mail.) ?

P.S. I pulled all three of my credit reports over the weekend and there is no chase on there in collections.

It is still a scam.  I guarantee you NO ONE is coming to serve you.  Scammers have phished enough information about you and an old debt to scare you into paying. I promise that if you said you would pay they would ask for the funds by Western Union, prepaid debit card or an I-tunes card.  The funds are not traceable back to them.  They use business names that are identical or REALLY close to real businesses so that if you google search them it lends legitimacy to their statements.  Second:  not only is suing time barred but NO state prosecutes defaulted credit cards as bank fraud.  Another red flag it is a scam.

Notify friends, family and your employer you have been targeted by a scammer and not to panic and pay.  You have several options for dealing with them.  Block the number and forget about it.  Answer the call next time and ask for an address where to send payment.  They will argue and fight they need payment "RIGHT NOW" and that you cannot mail it.  Sure sign it is a scam.  Answer the phone call and tell them to go [expletive] themselves.  Tell them you are not that stupid and REFUSE to pay. Tell them you know they are scammers and have notified law enforcement and everyone you have ever met or are related to that they are scammers.  Or another favorite of mine:  once you know they are listening on their end of the phone use a police whistle or air horn to blow out their ear drums.

Trust me once they figure out you won't fall for it they will move on to another target.  DO NOT worry about this and DO NOT pay.

We got one of those from someone claiming to be IRS. After arguing and having the "manager" put on the phone, my wife said "OK, how do I settle this today?" It totally messed up their script - they got all flustered and hung up.

I will admit when I first got a couple of those calls during the recession I panicked and feared the worst.  Once I figured out it was a scam and nothing would come of it I enjoyed getting them to so I could mess with them.  Of course they rarely come now because my name/number has slowly landed on the "won't fall for it and pay" list.

If they call today, I would ask them when I will be served. I would not be shocked if they try to threaten arrest when you say that.
