JayB78
Hello. I am in need of some advice. I have received several harassing phone calls from a so called "legal office". The caller (of which may be a pre-recorded voice) states that legal papers have been filed against me. The caller always states that I must return their call "today" (no matter which time they called, it is always today) and that if I don't call them back that someone will come to my house or my work today. The caller seems to know my address and the name of my employer, but they never leave a name for their company. The number that shows up on my caller id is always a local number, but the number they give me to call them back is an 844 number. The caller always ends the call with the line "and you have now been legally notified". This smells like a scam to me, but I am tired of these harassing phone calls. They even called my Mother-in-law once looking for me with the same information. I need some advice on how to stop these calls and handle this situation. I’ve received those calls, as well. If you end up talking to the caller, screw around with him. I’ve told them that I can’t wait for someone to come serve me papers because no one ever visits me, and I’m so excited to have company. You could start out by telling him that you are recording the call. If you have an air horn, blast it into the phone. Just anything to let the caller know you’re not taking him seriously. Clydesmom
What @BV80 said. SCAM. Notify friends, family and employer you have been targeted by a scammer and not to panic and pay them. You can ignore them and when you don't respond they will simply move on to another target. Or, as BV said: mess with them. My favorite answer is I will make coffee you bring donuts or the air horn. If you were to speak to them the "we are going to serve you" arrest you or what ever threat is to scare you into agreeing to pay them right now. It moves to the whole "you can avoid this today by paying" the amount is always between $400 and $1000. They want it by prepaid debt/credit card, I-Tunes cards, or Western Union because the money cannot be traced to them. NEVER EVER pay. If you were to pay they add your name to the suckers list and in a few weeks or months another call would come about another alleged debt. If you don't pay your name goes on the "won't fall for it don't waste your time list." They phish just enough accurate information on the person to create enough fear that they are likely to panic and pay. DO NOT fall for it.
rfrielly
Tell them you are off on vacation in wonderland and don't know when you will be back.... ask them also if you are the lottery winner and that would be the only reason for you to return...... If they are calling you on a cell phone press 9 on your phone and it should hang you up... CALLWATCH is a good app as well.
