I had an Old Navy credit card through Synchrony Bank on my credit report it shows closed $0 "charged off as bad debt purchased by another lender". The lender who purchased it is Midland Funding. However Midland Funding does not show on my credit report. I am trying to have it removed do I dispute it with Synchrony directly or with Midland?

Since Midland is not reporting, you would not dispute with them.

However, no matter which company is reporting, you must dispute with the credit reporting agencies (CRAs).  You must have a valid dispute.

If the account was yours, the entry will remain.  All that furnishers (banks, collection agencies, etc.) are required to do is provide accurate information (balance, date of first delinquency etc.)  Any information that cannot be verified will be removed.   But the rest of the entry remains.

Is anything being reported incorrectly?

I have been disputing charge offs on my credit report and getting them removed so I wanted to try with this one as well. Since the balance shows $0 I didn't know if I should dispute with Midland. If I do dispute and it happens to fall off will Midland stop attempting to collect?

Midland can still attempt to collect and report because it has purchased the account and is the new owner.  Synchrony no longer owns it and has nothing to do with the collection of the balance.

What is the DOFD being reported by Synchrony?

Date of First Delinquency.  It’s the date the account went into default and you never paid enough to bring it back to a current status.

It appears that it’s probably a more recent charge off.  You could dispute with the CRAs.   If Synchrony doesn’t verify, the information you disputed will be deleted

Just an FYI about deletions.  After an item has been deleted due to the fact that the furnisher did not verify, the furnisher can verify at a later date, and the information can be reinserted on your credit report.

I had a "pre-legal" notification sent to me from Midland regarding this account. I sent a debt validation letter and have not heard anything back. I figured I would try to dispute it with the CRA to have it removed

It doesn’t hurt to try.

I would not start disputing anything only based on information from Credit Karma.  I would get a full hard copy of my credit report by mail from all 3 CRAs.

Also, removing this account from your reports, if successful, will not change the fact that you are very likely to be sued by Midland soon.  I would read up on the arbitration section of this site (see the link in my signature).  Using the Synchrony Card Agreement containing the arbitration section and getting the court to grant a motion to force arbitration will make Midland drop everything like a hot potato.

I did pull credit reports and it does NOT show any collection account. However 2 of my accounts (both synchrony) say collection.
