lomofirefly
I have been slowly but steadily rebuilding my credit and paying off a few collections. Out of the blue today I get a phone call from a place called Receivables Credit Associates stating an account has been transferred to them and I need to set up a settlement on there website. I go over to the website and its for a Citi NA/Forward card equaling $7000 that I swear I have never had (I would have remembered that amount because wow that's a lot and normally I was only given about $2000 at the most in credit) but they have my social and when I asked about verifying they said "we don't do that by the time it gets to us that means its verified or you will have to send us proof" so I googled the phone number they use and nothing came up. Then I googled the name and no building came up. Does this sound a bit like a scam to yall too? I looked up my credit info just to verify and I can't find anything where I had a Citi card of that amount. Wondering if anyone else has had them call? Website is rcapay.com Edit: I shouldn't even have logged in because now I have received another phone call from a different number stating "We seen you log into the website but you did not select a payment plan please give us a call so we can get this taken care of" did some digging and they used to be called ASG Recovers. nobk4me
Is it possible this is an old debt, originally about $2000, but with interest over the years, now it's up to $7K? How old are these debts? Or could this be identity theft? Since this is a debt collector, not an OC, they are subject to the FDCPA. They should send you a dunning letter within 5 days. The letter should give you the right to dispute the debt within 30 days. If you do so, they must suspend collection efforts until they validate. If is is a real collection agency, it sounds like they are the type that violates the law. Keep good records, send everything by certified mail. You may have a case a consumer attorney will be happy to take, and you could get $1000 in statutory damages. 1
lomofirefly
It would have to be anything from 2003 and up is my guess. I may need to order an actual credit report and go back over it because credit karma shows nothing from Citi. They say that they don’t need to validate because by the time it gets to them it’s already valid. I can dispute but I have to do it all they won’t look into it they claim that by the time it gets to them they don’t have to show proof. just seems really odd. I have been working with Midland and Portfolio and they are much better well as far as collectors go.

Even if it is a debt that you know is valid and you know that you owe, you have the right under FDCPA to dispute it and request validation. Under the law, they have to show proof it's valid, not you. All you have to say is you dispute the debt, please validate. And if this debt is really old, it is time-barred. Meaning the statute of limitations has passed, and they can't sue you. If it's from 2003, you can tell them to pound sand and never contact you again.
lomofirefly
Thanks everyone! This all seems super shady so I am going to tell them I dispute it and request validation then move on.
diannenj
Same thing happened to me today. Received a phone call. Decided to Google. Went to their website (my last name is spelled wrong). I started a chat asking what this debt was. They stated M&T Bank, which was a motorcycle loan I co-signed for my then husband back in 1996. It defaulted and never heard anything from them since around 1998. I asked in the chat for date this debt was incurred because I don't recall it. They responded that 'it is a few years old so we made you a great deal'. I again asked for more information and they ended the chat. I then received a phone call saying I didn't complete the payment plan info and to please log in and do so. So, I reopened the chat and again asked for validation to be mailed to be. Here is the result of that chat: Today Hello, my previous chat was disconnected. I am trying to find out more about this debt. Can you please let me know when it was incurred as I have no knowledge CS To view your account details you can enter the phone number we contacted you at thru our website, and the last 4 of your social. There, you will see your account, balance, and payment options. Customer Support I already see that, but I have no knowledge of this account. I am asking for more information about it CS What is your phone number that was called? Customer Support 86xxxxxxxxx CS The account has been updated and will be closed out within 2 business days. If you get any calls from us please disregard them. Customer Support
lomofirefly
Sounds like they are bottom feeders for sure. I get texts every now and then from them but they haven't taken the time to validate anything yet.
MeMeMe444
These pos just started calling and leaning automated voicemails within the last couple of days. I tried calling them back and it’s just all automated and it won’t let you speak to any LIVE people and no way I’m giving out my social to a robot who I don’t even know if legit. I refuse to go on their scam-a$$ website and give them any info on me or my spouse. They can seriously take a hike as I have perfect credit and only have some debt from WAY back in the day (at least 20 years) and they are not going to start up **** with me over that! FOOLS! Who actually gives this place their info? Please DO NOT!

If your debts are 20 years old, they are way beyond the statute of limitations, meaning they can't sue you, and they are too old to impact your credit score. You are correct, don't deal with these bottom feeders.
Mags
COMPLETE SCAM. They called saying I owe Citibank. I had one account with Citibank(which I owed no money), but screwed up by using my married name in the phone call. The name on my account was my maiden name. Confirmed it was a scam, reported it to Citibank.
Flyingifr
"They say that they don’t need to validate because by the time it gets to them it’s already valid." That statement alone is a FDCPA violation. It simply isn't true, and FDCPA prohibits "false or misleading statements" by a collector. If you were me, the summons for the FDCPA violation would already be on its way to them.

The problem with this is that if the business is not legitimate, chances are it cannot be located in order to serve the summons. As a result, the consumer has wasted time and money.
