elfeo99000 Posted October 10, 2025 Report Posted October 10, 2025 So I have been recently released from prison. While inside, my bank closed my accounts because of my conviction. I tried to open another account on Monday and was told that they were not able to open an account for me. My online brokerage also told me that I had 30 days to close my accounts (IRA, SEP and a taxable account). Any thoughts? It seems that banks are able to find my conviction and are using that to decline me. Quote
nobk4me Posted October 10, 2025 Report Posted October 10, 2025 I suspect your specific problems and history are beyond the ability of most posters here to help. I would suggest contacting an attorney. Maybe Legal Aid could help? Quote
LaneBlane Posted October 10, 2025 Report Posted October 10, 2025 I responded to a post you left on another thread you started. Did the state or the prison provide you with any information on getting acclimated once you were released? There may be a resource you can call about opening a bank account. I'd also mentioned using grok.com, X's version of AI. You could ask a variety of questions to try to figure things out like... Can I open a bank account if I've been convicted of _______ in [state]? Long ago I had an issue opening up a bank account because I was listed on something called ChexSystems. I had to contact ChexSystems to straighten out some incorrect information reported under my name after I moved. ChexSystems may also report criminal backgrounds. If I remember correctly, you can request your ChexSystems report, just as you can obtain your credit reports. Quote
elfeo99000 Posted October 11, 2025 Author Report Posted October 11, 2025 So the only resources given was how to apply for food stamps. Other than that, nothing. Quote
