Though there are reputable credit repair companies out there, one man’s recent worst-case scenario is a sobering reminder to do your homework and make sure the company you’re doing business with stacks up. As reported by Las Vegas’ ABC 13 Action News, a local man paid $1,600 to a credit repair company over a year ago, and has yet to see any of the promised results. However, the contract he signed stipulates that he is not entitled to a refund. Plain and simple, his dealings with this credit repair company have left him in worse shape than when he started.

First of all, reputable credit repair companies should not ask for money to be paid before services are provided. This is one among several red flags to run from if:

  • You aren’t given a copy of the the “Consumer Credit File Rights Under State and Federal Law”
  • You aren’t given a contract to view prior to signing it
  • You are asked for payment upfront before any services are performed
  • This company promises to remove “accurately” reported information from your report
  • They want to create a “new” identity for you

Of course, you can avoid the risk altogether by exploring your credit repair options on your own. As we have written extensively here at, there is nothing a credit repair agency can do for you that you cannot do for yourself. In fact, we have an entire section on the website devoted to this very thing, providing you with all the information you need to personally give credit repair your best shot.
